III. Section 3. Outreach Initiatives
Townsquare Media of Grand Rapids engages in numerous programs and activities designed to broadly disseminate information about professional opportunities in broadcasting at our stations and to reach out to the community to enable individuals to acquire the skills needed to pursue careers in broadcasting. The following initiatives, together with those described in Townsquare Media’s previous Public File Report, are sufficient to satisfy the Commission’s EEO requirements under Section 73.2080(c)(2).
1. Unpaid Internship Program – Townsquare Media taught 10 college students with our unpaid internship program during the period: 6 from Grand Valley State University, 1 from Grand Rapids Community College, 2 from Ferris State University and 1 from Baker College. One student was hired as part time promotions assistant.
2. On Air Announcements – June 27 thru July 30, 2012, all stations posted on air notices that stations were hiring Digital Account Executives. 634 commercials aired.
3. Allendale Middle School – August 2012 thru May 2013, Jackie Green, WGRD on Air Host, ongoing commitment coaching middle school students in Track & Cross Country. Opportunities to teach, mentor and influence career choices.
4. Grand Rapids Public Schools Back to School Event – September 5, 2012, Matt Hendricks, WFGR On Air Host, spoke to returning students about the importance of education and the role it plays in career choices, offering up broadcasting as a potential career choice.
5. Boy Scout Troop – October 12, 2012, Matt Hendricks,WFGR On Air Host, hosted scouts for tour.
6. Michigan Association of Broadcasters – October 16, 2012, Western Michigan University, Bill Campbell, Digital Sales Manager, represented Townsquare Media at this Career Fair providing opportunities to learn about broadcasting careers
7. Knapp Charter Academy – October 26, 2012, Niki Bloem, National Sales Assistant represented Townsquare for Shadow Day at the school where she spent over 3 hours mentoring a middle school student on topics ranging from to potential career choices.
8. Michigan Association of Broadcasters – November 9, 2012, Lansing Community College, Mitch Rasmussen, General Sales Manager, represented Townsquare Media at this Career Fair providing opportunities to learn about broadcasting careers.
9. Coit Elementary School Arts Academy – December 20, 2012, Matt Hendricks, WFGR On Air Host, represented Townsquare Media at educational event. He had an opportunity to interact with students and parents and provided information about Townsquare and opportunities available.
10. White Lake Community Education – January 17, 2013, Andy O’Reilly, WFGR Morning Show Host, met with class of at risk teens to foster interest in broadcasting as a potential career choice.
11. On Air Announcements – February 9 thru March 3, 2013, all stations posted on air notices that stations were hiring Account Executives. 410 commercials aired.
12. Tiger Cubs Boy Scout Troop – March 15, 2013, Niki Bloem, National Sales Assistant hosted troop tour.
13. Boy Scout Troop #3219 – May 9, 2013, Mike Maciejewski, Chief Engineer, hosted scouts for tour.
14. Literacy Center of West Michigan-May11, 2012, Matt Hendricks & Craig Russell, WFGR On Air Hosts, collaboration with Literacy Counsel Spelling Bee to promote literacy. Students had an opportunity to speak with station representatives who taught them how important reading and spelling are in the broadcast medium. Spoke with several about how they became involved in broadcasting as a career.
15. Job Shadows – May 12, 2013, Craig Russell & Matt Hendricks, WFGR On Air Hosts, hosted job shows for 6 hours each. One student was from Portage Central High School, the other from Vicksburg High School.
16. WGRD Boys Baseball – Spring 2013, Jerry Tarrants, Townsquare Operations Manager, mentored and coached pre-teen boys team in sports, school and potential career choices
